OPEC+ poised to raise oil output by over 500,000 barrels per day

OPEC+ is set to approve a production increase of 548,000 barrels per day from September, according to three sources familiar with the talks.
The decision is expected during a virtual meeting scheduled to begin at 1100 GMT on Sunday.
The move comes amid growing concerns over supply disruptions linked to Russia and renewed U.S. pressure on India to curb imports of Russian crude as part of broader diplomatic efforts to bring Moscow to the negotiating table over Ukraine.
If agreed, the increase would mark a complete reversal of the group’s largest production cuts made in recent years. OPEC+, which comprises the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia and Kazakhstan, accounts for around half of global oil output.
The group began gradually increasing supply in April after years of curbs aimed at supporting prices. Production rose by 138,000 barrels per day in April, followed by successive hikes of 411,000 barrels in May, June, and July, and 548,000 in August.
Brent crude prices have remained high, closing near $70 a barrel on Friday, well above April’s low of $58.
The planned September increase would fully unwind a 2.2 million bpd cut, and also permit the UAE to boost output by 300,000 bpd.
Other voluntary cuts remain in place, including a separate 1.65 million bpd reduction by eight members and a 2 million bpd cut across the group, both set to expire by the end of 2026. No further cut adjustments are expected at Sunday’s meeting.
