Pinterest will lay off about 15% of its workforce as part of a restructuring aimed at redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence, the company said on Tuesday.

In a regulatory filing, the San Francisco-based company said the job cuts are linked to “transformation initiatives.” These include reallocating staff to AI-focused roles and prioritising AI-powered products.

Pinterest also said it is reshaping its sales and go-to-market strategy as part of the restructuring.

The company expects the layoffs to affect hundreds of employees. Pinterest had around 5,200 workers at the end of last year, it told the Associated Press.

Alongside the job cuts, Pinterest plans to reduce its office space. It said the restructuring is expected to be completed by the end of September.

The company estimates it will record pretax charges of between $35 million and $45 million related to the plan.

Pinterest has recently expanded its use of artificial intelligence in consumer products. In October, it introduced AI-powered updates to users’ boards and launched Pinterest Assistant, which provides shopping recommendations.

Shares of Pinterest fell more than 9% in midday trading on Tuesday.
