U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen visited Chattogram port on Monday to welcome a shipment of American wheat.
The visit marked the arrival of nearly 60,000 metric tons of U.S. wheat at the port. The delivery is part of a consignment totaling more than 173,000 metric tons.
Ambassador Christensen was joined by Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman and Food Secretary Md. Firoz Sarker. Officials said the shipment highlighted growing commercial cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.
The wheat includes almost 115,000 metric tons of soft white wheat from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. It also includes nearly 60,000 metric tons of hard red winter wheat from Montana and Nebraska.
U.S. officials said the wheat would help meet Bangladesh’s food needs. The country produces about 13 percent of the wheat it consumes each year.
The shipment follows a memorandum of understanding signed in July 2025. Under the deal, Bangladesh agreed to buy up to 700,000 metric tons of U.S. wheat annually until 2030.
The agreement was signed between Bangladesh’s Ministry of Food and the U.S. Wheat Association. Purchases are being made through international trader AgroCorp.
Bangladesh has bought about 660,000 metric tons of U.S. wheat under the agreement. More than 350,000 metric tons have been delivered.
U.S. officials said the deal supports American farmers while helping ensure a steady supply of grain for Bangladesh.
