Vietnam has granted a license to Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk, to operate in the country.
The Radio Frequency Management Authority said Starlink Services Vietnam Co. can deploy up to four gateway stations and a maximum of 600,000 terminal devices. The license requires the company to ensure no interference with existing radio communication networks.
Starlink provides high-speed internet through low Earth orbit satellites. The service aims to expand connectivity, particularly in rural and mountainous areas where internet access remains limited.
About 80 percent of Vietnam’s nearly 100 million people use the internet, according to the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center.
Starlink’s parent company, SpaceX, did not immediately comment. The company’s website lists services in Vietnam as “coming soon.”
Vietnam recorded 8.0 percent economic growth last year and is targeting double-digit growth this year.
