Bangladesh’s telecom regulator has moved to ease industry concerns after allocating 700 MHz spectrum to Grameenphone.
On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission invited operators Robi Axiata and Banglalink to a discussion on low-band spectrum policy. The move followed the issue of a demand note to Grameenphone for 10 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band.
Grameenphone said the 13-year allocation would add about BDT 22 billion to government revenue. It said the spectrum would help improve coverage, boost indoor connectivity and raise service quality in cities and rural areas.
The company described the investment as part of its long-term plan to strengthen networks and prepare for technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.
Robi and Banglalink have called for all low-band spectrum, including the EGSM band, to be released through a coordinated auction.
Analysts say that long-term sector stability depends on fair spectrum distribution and not only network expansion.
