US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that India will buy oil from Venezuela instead of purchasing it from Iran.
Trump spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One as he travelled to his Florida home. He said the United States and India had already “made that deal, the concept of the deal” to supply Venezuelan crude to New Delhi.
The comments followed reports that the United States has told India it could soon resume purchases of Venezuelan oil to help replace some Russian crude imports. India has reduced purchases of Iranian oil in recent years under longstanding US sanctions, while its Russian oil imports grew after the invasion of Ukraine.
Trump also said China could make a deal with the United States to buy Venezuelan oil, but he did not provide details.
India has not confirmed any new oil purchase deal with Venezuela.
